Miles of Impact: Queens Centers for Progress Turns Out for Inspiring Day at the TCS NYC Marathon

Queens Centers for Progress (QCP) had an unforgettable day at this year’s TCS NYC Marathon! We are beyond thrilled to celebrate our incredible team of runners who took on every mile with grit, heart, and a shared purpose. For them, crossing that finish line was not only a powerful achievement but also an inspiring show of support for the children and adults with developmental disabilities who rely on QCP’ services every day.

This year, Team QCP included Sterling Ivey, Sally Brophy, Elizabeth Sullebarger, Morgan Gryga, Hayden Gill, Melissa Milstrey, William Sullebarger, and Christian Martinez. Each of these remarkable individuals carried QCP’s mission through the 26.2 miles, raising awareness and funds with every step. Their dedication has made a lasting impact, and we could not be prouder to have them represent us.

As they made their way through Queens, the atmosphere in Long Island City transformed into a hub of excitement. For the 14th year, QCP teamed up with Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) and the Queens Tourism Council to set up a cheer section just past mile 14 on 44th Drive and 21st Street. With students from Bayside High School’s Key Club and John Bowne High School’s Arista Honor Society by our side, they became a true motivator for runners tackling the marathon’s toughest miles.

We were not the only ones creating inspiration along the course. Achilles International’s athletes brought an incredible spirit of resilience and determination to the race. Their presence was a powerful reminder that challenges can be overcome, and seeing their strength was uplifting for everyone around them.

As if the day could not get any more meaningful, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. made an appearance to celebrate the runners. “I just love the resilience of the runners and know that every single one of them has their own story to tell. They trained and maybe they’re running for a purpose—but no matter what, they are finishing this race—no matter how fast, no matter how slow,” he stated. “It is an amazing feeling to be out here cheering with the students from local high schools in Queens, all of whom brought excitement to our cheer section, creating a great memory of our borough for the runners.”

Councilmember James F. Gennaro also joined us in cheering and showing his support for QCP and our community. Their presence underscored the pride and unity that makes Queens unique and strong. Wendy Phaff-Gennaro, QCP’s Director of Development, expressed her excitement, “It’s always amazing welcoming the runners through Queens. Having Borough President Richards and Councilmember Gennaro join us made the day even more special, showcasing what it really means to have our community coming together for a great cause!”

None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our Team QCP coach, Ottilia Demeter. We are deeply grateful for her unwavering support and encouragement, which guided our runners through every mile of training—we could not have asked for a more inspiring leader to help Team QCP on this journey.

And to those on Team QCP who are gearing up to take on the marathon in 2025, we are already looking forward to cheering you on next year!
